So I made a character and put him in the Prodigy.
You may have seen him around, Travis.
I had this idea that I had been wanting to try for him, which is the ability to gather ambient energy from the space around him and manipulate it for various effects; Blasts, defenses, healing, flight, etc.
Now, I just found this info on Silver Surfer, someone who I've never followed and never even read the powers on.
[shadow=red,left,300]The Silver Surfer wields the Power Cosmic, granting him superhuman strength, stamina, durability, senses and the ability to absorb and manipulate the universe's ambient energy for a variety of effects.[/shadow]
Knowing this now, should I go back and change Travis' power(s)? Is it too similar, will people think I'm just ripping Silver Surfer off?

I think you're safe myself. Shamrock gets her powers from spells in a spell book. She memorizes the 'rote' and then goes out and casts them. Is that a rip off of... all the other witches?

Just about every powerset there is, is also used by some established character, don't stress about it IMO

The Power Cosmic is basically the power. Those who wield it are able to do great things, wars have been fought over it, etc, etc. The ability you describe Travis as having is not unique. The key is to define what the power source is. You can say Ambient Energy but that's not as defining as saying something like "The energy generated by individual molecules as they vibrate" or "Residual Solar Radiation" or by "Absorbing Electrons". You can certainly leave it undefined, or as something to be discovered later. But there's a bazillion heroes who do basically the same things but with a pallet swap and a different excuse as to why. So far that your hero is not necessarily unique shouldn't stop you otherwise you'd never get anywhere.

Character and personality counts 500% more than powers anyway

He's coming out (no pun intended) to have the personality of a stereotypical gay guy. It scares me... because I'm basically RPing him as a version of myself. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't THINK Silver Surfer acts like a gay guy...

Closest to being gay you'll have with the surfer is your standard heterosexual bromance. also, screw schoolwork, keeping me away from the game like that.

As to the power thing the power cosmic, which is what the surfer has is the power to do basically anything, it comes from the ambient energy of the universe, never more defined, it can do anything basically. See through time, make you superman, defy a curse Dr. strange cant break. Its the power of writer fiat. On the personality, Surfer doesn't really have one. Some writers have from time to time tried to give him one, Naive being the main trait, but imperious, or callous or a few other one word descriptions is all he has ever seemed to have at time. Really as long as you dont look like a naked metal guy or a servant of a Galactuseque being you shouldn't worry about being compared to the surfer. On and as wily said there are a bunch of characters that do the same things, heck marvel has a squadron of power cosmic wielders. DC has 7200 guys with the same power ring, who are currently fighting guys with different color rings. Attempting to be totally unique with powers lands you with a Flex Mentallo > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flex_Mentallo

Have to agree... Powers are only part of the equation. Sounds like you've got your concept carved out, man. I wouldn't worry about it at all...

I got some help from a friend and wrote this up.
[shadow=red,left,300]Travis was born with a minor mutation. He could form small sparks of energy, much like static shocks from a balloon, or a person walking on carpet. He grew up with this ability for his entire life, but it was never really a problem, nor was it particularly useful.
Travis lived his life in total normalcy until 2003. Unbeknownst to him, his mutation was much stronger than anyone thought. The earth's magnetosphere, the same layer that shielded the earth from the sun, shielded him as well. In 2003, though, the military began testing HAARP on a large scale for military purposes. This was nothing that would normally cause a problem, but for Travis... One test was near his hometown, although the beam wasn't strong enough to reach the ground. As the beam struck through the magnetosphere, it ionixed the air, piercing the layer like a pin punctures a balloon, just enough to expose Travis, and it sparked something in his mutation. It changed it, his DNA was altered and his powers grew a thousand fold.
Travis now controls the ability to manipulate the endless amounts of ambient radiation in space around him. After gathering it and channeling it through his control, he can direct it into powerful blasts, sturdy defenses, and even stimulate healing. Considering all the unused energy in the universe, Travis has barely tapped his potential with his powers. [/shadow]

The Silver Surfer is a cosmic Hippy.
Hardwired is wrong here, he DOES have a personality.
He was created in the era of Eastern Philopshy, and Stan Lee kinda modeled him after that. He's a Cosmic Zen Guru forced to work for the Eater of Planets.
Until he Broke Free and became an Emo Cosmic Guru.
